Systematic and taxonomic issues concerning some East African bird species, notably those where treatment varies between authors
The taxonomy of various East African bird species is discussed. Fourteen of the non-passerines and forty-eight of the passerines listed in Britton (1980) are considered, with reference to treatments by various subsequent authors. Twenty-three species splits are recommended from the treatment in Britton (op. cit.), and one lump, the inclusion of Jackson’s Hornbill Tockus jacksoni as a race of T. deckeni
Evaluation of the Coverage of 3 Antibiotic Regimens for Neonatal Sepsis in the Hospital Setting Across Asian Countries.
Importance: High levels of antimicrobial resistance in neonatal bloodstream isolates are being reported globally, including in Asia. Local hospital antibiogram data may include too few isolates to meaningfully examine the expected coverage of antibiotic regimens. Objective: To assess the coverage offered by 3 antibiotic regimens for empirical treatment of neonatal sepsis in Asian countries. Design, Setting, and Participants: A decision analytical model was used to estimate coverage of 3 prespecified antibiotic regimens according to a weighted-incidence syndromic combination antibiogram. Relevant data to parameterize the models were identified from a systematic search of Ovid MEDLINE and Embase. Data from Asian countries published from 2014 onward were of interest. Only data on blood culture isolates from neonates with sepsis, bloodstream infection, or bacteremia reported from the relevant setting were included. Data analysis was performed from April 2019 to July 2019. Exposures: The prespecified regimens of interest were aminopenicillin-gentamicin, third-generation cephalosporins (cefotaxime or ceftriaxone), and meropenem. The relative incidence of different bacteria and their antimicrobial susceptibility to antibiotics relevant for determining expected concordance with these regimens were extracted. Main Outcomes and Measures: Coverage was calculated on the basis of a decision-tree model incorporating relative bacterial incidence and antimicrobial susceptibility of relevant isolates. Data on 7 bacteria most commonly reported in the included studies were used for estimating coverage, which was reported at the country level. Results: Data from 48 studies reporting on 10 countries and 8376 isolates were used. Individual countries reported 51 (Vietnam) to 6284 (India) isolates. Coverage varied considerably between countries. Meropenem was generally estimated to provide the highest coverage, ranging from 64.0% (95% credible interval [CrI], 62.6%-65.4%) in India to 90.6% (95% CrI, 86.2%-94.4%) in Cambodia, followed by aminopenicillin-gentamicin (from 35.9% [95% CrI, 27.7%-44.0%] in Indonesia to 81.0% [95% CrI, 71.1%-89.7%] in Laos) and cefotaxime or ceftriaxone (from 17.9% [95% CrI, 11.7%-24.7%] in Indonesia to 75.0% [95% CrI, 64.8%-84.1%] in Laos). Aminopenicillin-gentamicin coverage was lower than that of meropenem in all countries except Laos (81.0%; 95% CrI, 71.1%-89.7%) and Nepal (74.3%; 95% CrI, 70.3%-78.2%), where 95% CrIs for aminopenicillin-gentamicin and meropenem were overlapping. Third-generation cephalosporin coverage was lowest of the 3 regimens in all countries. The coverage difference between aminopenicillin-gentamicin and meropenem for countries with nonoverlapping 95% CrIs ranged from -15.9% in China to -52.9% in Indonesia. Conclusions and Relevance: This study's findings suggest that noncarbapenem antibiotic regimens may provide limited coverage for empirical treatment of neonatal sepsis in many Asian countries. Alternative regimens must be studied to limit carbapenem consumption
Using Ancillary Text to Index Web-based Multimedia Objects
PériCulture est le nom d'un projet de recherche à l'Université de Montréal qui fait partie d'un projet plus vaste basé à l'Université de Sherbrooke. Ce dernier visait à former un réseau de recherche pour la gestion du contenu culturel numérique canadien. L'objectif général de la recherche de PériCulture était d'étudier les méthodes d'indexation de contenus culturels non textuels sur le Web, plus spécifiquement des images. Les résultats de la recherche présentés ici s'appuient sur des travaux précédents en indexation d'images et en indexation automatique
(de texte), par l'étude des propriétés du texte associé à des images dans un environnement réseau. Le but était de comprendre la façon dont le texte associé à des images sur des pages Web (appelé péritexte) peut être exploité pour indexer les images correspondantes. Nous avons étudié cette question dans le contexte de pages Web sélectionnées, c'est à dire : des pages de contenu culturel canadien contenant des objets multimédia auxquels était associé du texte (plus que simplement les noms de fichiers et les légendes) et qui étaient bilingues (anglais et français). Nous avons identifié les mots-clés utiles à l'indexation situés à proximité de l'objet décrit. Les termes d'indexation potentiels ont été identifiés dans diverses balises HTML et dans le texte intégral (chacun étant considéré comme une source différente de péritexte). Notre étude a révélé qu'un grand nombre de termes d'indexation utiles sont disponibles dans le péritexte de nombreux sites Web ayant un contenu culturel, et ce péritexte de différentes sources a une utilité variable dans la recherche d’information. Nos résultats suggèrent que ces termes peuvent être exploités de différentes manières dans les systèmes de recherche d’information pour améliorer les résultats de recherche.Réseau de recherche pour la gestion du contenu culturel numérique. Estimating aboveground carbon density and its uncertainty in Borneo's structurally complex tropical forests using airborne laser scanning
Abstract. Borneo contains some of the world's most biodiverse and carbon-dense tropical forest, but this 750 000 km2 island has lost 62 % of its old-growth forests within the last 40 years. Efforts to protect and restore the remaining forests of Borneo hinge on recognizing the ecosystem services they provide, including their ability to store and sequester carbon. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is a remote sensing technology that allows forest structural properties to be captured in great detail across vast geographic areas. In recent years ALS has been integrated into statewide assessments of forest carbon in Neotropical and African regions, but not yet in Asia. For this to happen new regional models need to be developed for estimating carbon stocks from ALS in tropical Asia, as the forests of this region are structurally and compositionally distinct from those found elsewhere in the tropics. By combining ALS imagery with data from 173 permanent forest plots spanning the lowland rainforests of Sabah on the island of Borneo, we develop a simple yet general model for estimating forest carbon stocks using ALS-derived canopy height and canopy cover as input metrics. An advanced feature of this new model is the propagation of uncertainty in both ALS- and ground-based data, allowing uncertainty in hectare-scale estimates of carbon stocks to be quantified robustly. We show that the model effectively captures variation in aboveground carbon stocks across extreme disturbance gradients spanning tall dipterocarp forests and heavily logged regions and clearly outperforms existing ALS-based models calibrated for the tropics, as well as currently available satellite-derived products. Our model provides a simple, generalized and effective approach for mapping forest carbon stocks in Borneo and underpins ongoing efforts to safeguard and facilitate the restoration of its unique tropical forests.This study was funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) Human Modified Tropical Forests research programme (grant numbers NE/K016377/1 and NE/K016407/1 awarded to the BALI and LOMBOK consortiums, respectively).
